What is good language teaching practice?

Good language teaching practice connects reading, writing, and vocabulary throughout the curriculum because it exposes students to learning in a variety of ways.

Providing students with different learning activities enhances understanding, increases language skills and improves communication between peers.

Daily read alouds also support social emotional development, builds background knowledge, and helps students to make connections to learning.

The importance of language functions for ELLs.

Communicative language includes speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills.  To support language development, it is important to use materials that encourage role play, student choice, and meaningful opportunities to learn from.

Conversations create situations for students to practice grammar while gaining a better understanding through context based learning using engaging and interactive activities to support language acquisition.

The Academic Language Function Toolkit shares a number of ways that you can develop language in all areas of the curriculum.

Universal Design for Learning

Why use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework?

  • Personalized learning can target student interests, needs, and individualized learning goals.

  • Students can show what they know in a number of ways.

Tools and Technology

There are many tools that can be used in the classroom to enhance everyday learning for your English Language Learners.  Podcasts, digital storybooks, and videos can be used to introduce and supplement learning topics in addition to supporting different levels of learners.  Technology allows students to adjust the speed for better understanding, and the opportunity to play back the information based on their learning needs.  In some instances students may require additional information to build background knowledge and having access to digital resources allow easy access 24/7.  The SAMR model shares a framework to support bringing technology into the classroom.
