PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS

Classroom Assessment
Identifying and Supporting ELLs
Identify your ELLs:
Assess students upon arrival at the school in order to determine the needs and services required.
-
Academic history and experiences
-
Languages spoken at home
-
Proficiency in first language
-
Basic academic skills
-
Other services required (IEP, Special Needs, etc.)
Considerations for support:
-
Connect with the ELL Specialist involved to develop an instructional plan. (Have regular checks in to ensure learning goals are being met.)
-
What additional ELL services are being provided? (Example: classroom pullouts, specialist support, or additional services in a classroom environment)
-
Create a schedule for learning supports.
-
Track progress with ELL Specialist and other support staff.
-
Document student growth in Student Progress Reports.
-
All aspects of language proficiency must be assessed in all areas of language development (reading, writing and oral language).
-
Assessment should take into consideration the student’s age, developmental maturity and academic, cultural, and social/emotional needs.
-
Ongoing reviews to ensure learning goals are being met.
-
Annual Instructional Plans (AIP)
